Comparison of One-Part and Two-Part Alkali-Activated Metakaolin and Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract One-part alkali-activated materials prepared with solid-form alkali activator are gaining attention in the construction industry, as they an easier and safer approach for cast-in-situ applications comparison two-part (i.e., involving use of alkali-activator solutions). The present study compares one-part conventional mixing methods two aluminosilicate precursors, metakaolin ground granulated blast-furnace slag, using identical mix designs (in terms molar ratios SiO 2 , Al O 3 Na O) both preparation methods. results revealed that delays setting time, increases heat reaction, decreases shrinkage, reaches between 80 85% compressive strength mix. In addition, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis showed no major differences one- two-part. However, energy-dispersive spectroscopy magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance experiments indicated extent reaction mixes is higher than one-part. Graphical
